At a Glance:
KHIRI CAMPUS’s program of Social Studies in Thailand and Cambodia invites students to delve into two very different societies of Thailand and Cambodia. It will provide students with a unique opportunity to compare and contrast these two countries that are at very different levels of social and economic development, and whose societies and cultures are quite different.
Thailand’s turbulent history, diverse society, and rich culture make it a fascinating and colorful destination in which to learn about the social dimensions of developing countries. With a population of 68 million people, it has a vibrant and fast-growing economy, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia.
Whereas the history and culture of Cambodia are older than those of Thailand, its people, economy, and government have had to overcome tremendous challenges in the recent past – the genocide of the Khmer Rouge and the Indochina war, for example – that have had a huge impact on Cambodian society and are still felt today.
