At a glance:
Indonesia’s diverse geographical condition, ranging from mountains to coastal areas, causes a wide variety of health conditions, and the lifestyles and diets of people from different ethnic backgrounds also have a unique impact on public wellbeing. A massive population of more than 270 million people across over 17,000 islands in the archipelago also poses a challenge for a government which aims to provide an accessible and comprehensive health service system for all.
This program provides a hands-on introduction to the many challenges facing Indonesia’s healthcare sector. Students will work alongside local practitioners to deliver primary healthcare services to communities in rural Yogyakarta, and deliver healthcare education in rural schools.
Communities and Project Impact:
This project provides an opportunity for students to understand the challenges of the health sector through firsthand and in-the-field activities, and expand their knowledge of healthcare practices within a diverse society.
The program is of great importance to the local communities as it creates access to healthcare provisions which would not otherwise be possible due to a lack of staff and funding. The skills and knowledge exchange between the visiting students and local staff, children and the communities more generally also promotes informal and formal learning and training opportunities locally.
