Bromo is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia which is a favourite destination for both local and foreign tourists. It is located in East Java, right in between Yogyakarta and Bali.
Did you know that the area of Bromo is inhabited by a predominantly Hindu community that has traditions closely related to the volcano? Bromo community, commonly called as Tengger people, has rituals performed surround Bromo volcano. For example, they routinely present the crops into the crater of the volcano to honor the spirits so they will not get angry and endanger the local people. That is why you can also see big temple on the way to the crater and small temple by the crater.
Apparently, the culture of Indonesian society influenced by natural conditions occurs not only in Bromo. In other mountains, local people also havecustoms and cultures that are closely related to the volcano (for example, the crops offering ceremony to the crater of Mount Kelud or the dreadlock cutting ritual in Dieng). By this means, mountain hiking or volcano trekking in Indonesia not only offers adventure activities but also gives you valuable knowledge about the social, economic, and cultural life of the local community.
